Best Age to Travel to Thailand

As a mom of four living in Bangkok, I’ve traveled back and forth between America and Thailand with babies, toddlers, elementary-aged kids, and teens.

Every stage comes with its own challenges and advantages:

Babies: Easy to carry and flexible

Toddlers: Love the beach and seeing animals

Elementary age: Perfect for cultural experiences

Teens: Ready for adventure!

After venturing to 24 countries with kids, I’ve realized that Thailand is one of the easiest countries in Asia for family travel. What matters most is planning the trip around your family’s travel style.

💡Important Tip: Don’t try to fit too much into one trip. Thailand looks small on a map, but travel days from one city to the next or one island to another can eat up valuable vacation time — especially with kids. Try to plan a minimum of 3-5 nights in each city/island.

Best Beach in Thailand for Families

One of our favorite places to travel in Thailand with any age is Koh Chang Island:

Why our family loves Koh Chang Island:

  • Koh Chang is the 3rd largest island in Thailand after Phuket and Koh Samui
  • Only about 4 hours from Bangkok
  • Has those tropical island, paradise vibes you are dreaming of
  • Fun activities like ethical elephant sanctuaries, snorkeling, zip lining through the jungle, hiking to water falls, or kayaking through mangrove forests
  • We love staying at the Koh Chang Paradise Resort & Spa because the pool, dining, and kids club are all beachfront, and the hotel rooms are these cute stand-alone villas. It even has a waterpark just for guests! The best part is we usually get it for less than $100/night! Whoop whoop!

MOST KID-FRIENDLY HOTEL : KOH CHANG PARADISE RESORT

Our family had an incredible experience at this beach-side resort with it's quiant bungalows, nightly fire shows, and it's own private waterpark just for guests. Sipping my morning coffee, enjoying the breakfast buffet, watching the waves roll in while my kids swam next to me at the seaside pool is a top memory of mine.

Must-have Travel Products with Kids

Here’s a few travel products that make international trips easier and less stressful with each age group:

Babies: Thailand isn’t so stroller-friendly, so bring a baby carrier. Also, we travel everywhere with our Baby Bjorn bouncer — it gives us a safe place to lay baby Ezra for a nap or play time, giving mama a minute to get ready, eat a meal, or just relax.

Toddlers: The hip seat carrier is a game changer with toddlers who can’t walk for long distances without having a melt-down on the floor. For the long international flights, we love Montessori busy books, finger puppets, window clings, and Water Wow books to keep them entertained.

Elementary age: A good pair of headphones for the long haul flight and a travel journal with prompts and stickers is perfect for keeping my school age kids happy on trips. Having fidget toys is my purse to beat boredom doesn’t hurt either.

Teens: Every teen I know loves a good neck pillow hoodie with eye mask for the long flight. And then keeping them cool with a portable fan on a super hot day helps keep the whining at bay.

Best Time to Visit Thailand

The best time to visit Thailand with kids is between December to February. But our family lives here year-round, and we love every season!

Thailand has a tropical climate, which means it is mostly hot and humid year round.

Temps range from about 75’F (22’C) to 100’F (40’C), but mostly stay in the high 80s (low 30’Cs).

Thailand generally has two seasons: wet and dry.

The Dry Season: November-April

  • Mostly clear, sunny days so it can get quite hot from 11am-4pm

The Wet Season: June-September

  • Short bursts of heavy rainfall, but doesn’t typically rain all day

Shoulder Season: May and October
